MARINETTE, Wis. -- A Fond du Lac man has been bound over for trial on a felony battery charge in a stabbing at a Niagara, Wis., bar on Memorial Day weekend.
Jason Kallenbach, 40, on July 20 waived his preliminary hearing in Marinette County Circuit Court on charges of aggravated battery -- bodily harm, a Class H felony that on conviction carries a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine; and disorderly conduct, a class B misdemeanor with a penalty of up to 90 days imprisonment and $1,000 fine.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses said Kallenbach had a conversation early May 23 with another patron at the Pit Stop Bar & Grill, where his sister is a co-owner. Kallenbach left the bar and returned a short time later, challenging the other man to fight before stabbing him in the lower left leg with a knife he had behind his back, witnesses said. Others at the bar managed to stanch the wounded man's bleeding with a belt as a tourniquet.
Kallenbach was arrested at his father's Town of Niagara home. The knife reportedly used has not been found, but a description by witnesses of a black-handled steak-type knife matched several found in his father's home, according to the criminal complaint.
A family member told authorities the wounded man has required extensive treatment, as the knife severed a muscle and nerve in the leg.
A status conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. Oct. 20 in Marinette County Circuit Court.
