IRON MOUNTAIN -- After 18 years of federal service, Kara Millan of Armstong Creek, Wis., retired from the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain on June 30.

She was born in Chicago and lived there until age 13, when her family moved "up north" to Wisconsin.

Millan started her VA career on June 8, 2008, at OGJVAMC. She worked in various areas during her tenure at the facility, first serving as a nursing assistant in the Community Living Center, and then supporting veterans from the call center. The majority of her career, more than 15 years, was dedicated to prosthetics, ending her career as a purchasing agent.

In addition to her professional role, Millan served many years on the OGJVAMC Employee Association, coordinating numerous fun employee engagement events and activities. She served two terms as the committee's president.

In her community, she is also the president of a local non-profit that organizes the annual Polish Heritage Day Festival in Armstrong Creek. Millan incorporated citizens for Armstrong Creek Inc. 36 years ago and continues to spearhead the popular festival.
