Person appears to have jumped to death off Mackinac Bridge

ST. IGNACE — Authorities have recovered the body of a person believed to have jumped early Thursday from the Mackinac Bridge.

A search found the body at about 6 p.m. Eastern time Friday in the Straits of Mackinac, according to a news release.

Michigan State Police had advised the public in a news release Thursday afternoon of the increased presence of law enforcement and U.S. Coast Guard personnel in the straits for search and recovery operations.

According to the MSP news release, troopers from the St. Ignace post responded about 12:35 a.m. ET to a report of an abandoned vehicle on the Mackinac Bridge.

Video footage showed the vehicle coming to a stop, then an individual getting out and jumping from the bridge.

MSP identified the individual from evidence in the vehicle and notified next of kin. MSP coordinated with the USCG and deployed additional resources, including the MSP Marine Services Team and the MSP Aviation Unit, for the search and recovery operations.

No further information was released.
