Remember when?

This photograph of the Henze-Tollen Brewing Company was taken sometime between 1900 and 1915. The brewing company was at 1106 Norway St. on Iron Mountain's North side.

This week’s “Remember When?” from the Menominee Range Historical Museum highlights the Henze-Tollen Brewing Company, once located at 1106 Norway St. on Iron Mountain’s north side.

The brewery was established in 1899. From 1901 through 1909, company officers included Louis A. Henze as president and manager, Gus Tollen as vice president, and George J. Eisele as secretary and treasurer.

O.R. Henze later served as secretary and treasurer from 1911 to 1913.

From 1917 to 1919, Louis A. Henze was president and general manager, while O.R. Henze continued as secretary and treasurer.

On Oct. 5, 1918, the Henze-Tollen Brewing Company suspended operations after producing two brands of near beer.

Earlier that year, anticipating the implementation of Michigan’s statewide prohibition law on May 1, the owners organized the Arbutus Beverage Company as a subsidiary to manufacture a high-grade line of soft drinks.

Following the brewery’s closure, the company continued producing ciders and other soft drinks on a reduced scale.

The Arbutus Beverage Company remained in operation until about 1921 or 1922.
