IRON MOUNTAIN -- For the first time, the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is rolling out an enrollment event just for women who served.
Two dates have been set: 4 to 7 p.m. Central time Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Northern Lights YMCA, 800 Crystal Lake Blvd., Iron Mountain; and 4 to 7 p.m. Eastern time Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Northern Lights YMCA, 2000 N. 30th St., Escanaba.
Led entirely by the VA's all-female outreach and enrollment team, this is a unique opportunity for female veterans in the Iron Mountain and Escanaba areas to get the care and benefits they deserve -- often for the very first time.
The PACT Act, signed into law in 2022, created major changes to who can qualify for VA health care. Many women who were previously told they weren't eligible are now finding out they can finally access VA benefits -- including free hearing aids, eyeglasses and lower-cost health care. Medication co-pays are affordable, starting at $8 and capped at $33, and many veterans pay nothing at all.
The event is open to all female veterans and their families. On-site child care will be available so veterans can focus on getting enrolled and learning about all their options. For those who are not sure about eligibility, this a chance to sit down with someone who can walk them through it, answer questions, and get them signed up on the spot.
Those who attend are requested to bring their DD214, last year's income, marriage date (if applicable), and the birthdates and Social Security numbers for any dependents.
