IRON MOUNTAIN — Vietnam veteran Gary Chapman has been named Dickinson County Veteran of the Year in recognition of his decades of service to fellow veterans and the community.

The 2026 selection was made by the Dickinson County Veteran Service Office, along with the Dickinson County Veterans Board. Chapman was honored at the annual Veteran Appreciation Picnic, with more than 750 in attendance.

The recipient was chosen from anonymous nomination letters, DCVSO Director Denise Formolo said.

The Kingsford resident served in the U.S. military from 1971 to 1973, during the Vietnam War. After his service, he joined American Legion Post 363 in Kingsford, where he has become a dedicated leader and volunteer.

“He has stepped up and provided the much-needed leadership to the post,” Formolo said.

Among his many accomplishments, Chapman founded the first Kingsford Sons of the American Legion Squadron, which continues to meet at his home.

He serves as master of ceremonies for local patriotic events, including Veterans Day programs at Kingsford Schools and Memorial Day services at Quinnesec Cemetery.

He also volunteers for the American Legion’s annual Poppy Days fundraiser, serves on the post’s honor guard.

“He has faithfully held the position of post adjutant for so many years that many members cannot remember anyone else in the role,” Formolo said.

Chapman retired after more than 30 years with Breitung Township Schools. He remains active in the community, continuing to work with local youth.

At age 75, he remains committed to honor and serve his fellow veterans, she said.

“There’s so many good veterans here — I was just surprised they picked me,” Chapman said after the announcement. “There are a lot of good men and women in this area and throughout the U.P., and I’m just proud to be Veteran of the Year.”

The Dickinson County Veteran Service Office congratulates Chapman and thanks him for his service and continued dedication to the veteran community, Formolo said.

The 2025 Dickinson County Veteran of the Year was Lew Adams; 2024, Dennis Lynch; and the inaugural in 2023, Ferrand “Sam” Ethington

Formolo appreciates all the veterans, volunteers, sponsors, vendors, community partners and everyone who came out to celebrate at the annual picnic.

“Your support made this event possible, and we couldn’t have done it without you,” she said.
