West Iron County School District voters approved a sinking fund replacement millage on Tuesday, one of a number of tax proposals to gain support in the county.
The West Iron vote was 1,100 yes to 717 no.
With a previously approved sinking fund millage expiring this year, the district sought a levy not to exceed 0.85 mills, or 85 cents per $1,000, for 10 years beginning in 2027. It will raise about $332,830 in the first year.
The millage is for such purposes as the repair or construction of buildings, security improvements, technology and student transportation.
According to results posted by the Iron County clerk's office, other proposals approved Tuesday were:
-- A county-wide millage renewal for advanced life support ambulance services. The levy of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years was approved 2,190 yes to 829 no. It will raise an estimated $762,981 in 2026.
-- A county-wide renewal of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years for the operation and improvement of Camp Ba-ta-wa-ga-ma. The vote was 1,985 yes to 1,028 no. The levy will raise an estimated $381,490 in 2027 for the youth camp on Indian Lake.
-- A four-year renewal of 0.5 mills for the Windsor Recreation Authority. The vote was 1,005 yes to 597 no. The levy in Bates and Iron River townships and the city of Iron River supports The Windsor Center. In 2027 it will raise an estimated $39,639 in Bates Township, $43,122 in Iron River Township, $65,068 in Stambaugh Township and $36,139 in the city of Iron River.
-- A Crystal Falls Township renewal of 3.5 mills, or $3.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years for general township operating purposes. The reported tally was 331 yes to 149 no.
-- A Hematite Township five-year millage of up to 5 mills, or $5 per $1,000 of taxable value, for maintaining and improving roads. The approval was 59 yes to 35 no. The millage will begin in 2027 and raise an estimated $123,056 in the first year.
-- Millage renewals in Mastodon Township for general operations and road improvements. A levy of 1.5 mills, or $1.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, for five years for roads was approved 152 yes to 88 no, while a 1.5-mill levy for five years for general operations was approved 152 yes to 110 no. Each levy will raise an estimated $158,742 in 2027.
Voter turnout was about 30%, both county-wide and in the West Iron County School District.
