Millages approved in Iron County

Voters in the West Iron County School District approved a sinking fund replacement millage proposal on Tuesday, according to unofficial results posted on the Iron County website.

The total was 1,100 yes to 717 no.

With a previously approved sinking fund millage expiring this year, the district sought a levy not to exceed 0.85 mills, or 85 cents per $1,000 for 10 years beginning in 2027. It will raise about $332,830 in the first year.

The millage is for such purposes as the repair or construction of buildings, security improvements, technology and student transportation.

According to the posted results, also approved were:

-- A county-wide millage renewal for advanced life support ambulance services. The levy of 1 mill, or $1 per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years was approved 2,190 yes to 829 no. It will raise an estimated $762,981 in 2026.

-- A county-wide renewal of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years for the operation and improvement of Camp Ba-ta-wa-ga-ma. The vote was 1,985 yes to 1,028 no. The levy will raise an estimated $381,490 in 2027 for the youth camp on Indian Lake.

-- A four-year renewal of 0.5 mills, or 50 cents per $1,000 of taxable value, for the Windsor Recreation Authority. The vote was 1,005 yes to 597 no. The levy in Bates and Iron River townships and the city of Iron River supports The Windsor Center.

-- A Crystal Falls Township renewal of 3.5 mills, or $3.50 per $1,000 of taxable value, for four years for general township operating purposes. The reported tally was 331 yes to 149 no.

-- A Hematite Township five-year millage of up to 5 mills, or $5 per $1,000 of taxable value, for roads. The totals were 59 yes to 35 no.

-- Millage renewals in Mastodon Township for general operations and road improvements. A levy of 1.5 mills for five years for roads was approved 152 yes to 88 no, while a 1.5-mill levy for five years for general operations was approved 152 yes to 110 no.
