Prestin gains Republican support in 38th Senate District

State Rep. David Prestin, R-Cedar River, held a sizable lead over former state Rep. Beau LaFave in the Republican primary for Michigan’s 38th District Senate seat with about 95% of precincts reporting early Wednesday.

District totals showed Prestin with 53% of the vote to 47% for LaFave, an advantage of nearly 2,000 votes.

The Senate seat will be vacated by Sen. Ed McBroom, R-Waucedah Township, who is term-limited.

Democratic candidate Kelli Van Ginhoven ran unopposed in Tuesday’s primary, while Sara Cambensy is running an independent campaign.
