SCHOOLCRAFT TOWNSHIP -- Few details were available, including on injuries, after a small plane went down Friday evening in rural Houghton County.
The crash was reported at 7:45 p.m. Friday on Township Park Road in Schoolcraft Township, according to the Michigan State Police Spl/Lt. Ashley Miller, Seventh District public information officer.
Miller said a full report had not been filed as of Monday morning. “There were no fatalities; however, I believe there were injuries,” she said.
Miller did not have names of those involved in the crash nor information regarding the extent of their injuries.
The Daily Mining Gazette contacted the National Transportation Safety Board, which handles all aircraft accidents. The NTSB responded just after 3 p.m. Eastern time Monday.
"NTSB is investigating the Aug. 14 crash of a Taylorcraft DCO-65 airplane near Copper City, Michigan. Preliminary information indicates the airplane lost power during takeoff from a private grass strip due to unknown circumstances."
The NTSB response indicated the agency's investigation involves three primary areas: The pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment.
A preliminary report will be available within 30 days; it can be accessed by searching the NTSB investigations database at https://my.ntsb.gov/.
The NTSB says the preliminary report will contain factual information gathered during the initial phase of the investigation. A probable cause of the crash, along with any contributing factors, will be detailed in the final report, which is expected in 12 to 24 months.
