Two from SC killed when motorcycles hit by SUV

OSCEOLA TOWNSHIP -- Two people from South Carolina died Wednesday after their motorcycles were struck by an SUV on U.S. 41 in Houghton County.
Michigan State Police troopers were dispatched at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to U.S. 41 near Golf Course Road in Oseola Township, According to an MSP news release, an SUV driven by a 45-year-old woman was southbound on U.S. 41 and was reportedly unaware a pickup ahead of her had stopped to make a left-hand turn onto Golf Course Road.
To avoid hitting the truck, the driver of the SUV swerved into the northbound lane of U.S. 41, where it collided with a pair of northbound motorcycles. The motorcyclists, a 65-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, both from South Carolina, died at the scene, the news release states.
The driver of the SUV and two child passengers were evaluated at the site by first responders before being released.
Both lanes of U.S. 41 were closed as a result of the accident, with traffic rerouted through nearby roads.
MSP Seventh District Public Information Officer Ashley Miller said the incident remains under investigation and any information gathered by police will be directed to the Houghton County Prosecutor's Office for review, adding, "That's standard protocol with anything like this."
In addition to State Police, Mercy EMS, Calumet Township Fire and Rescue and deputies from the Houghton County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident.
Wednesday's fatal accident was the second locally in less than a week. Last Friday evening, a 72-year-man from Wisconsin died as the result of a motorcycle accident in Keweenaw County's Grant Township.
