GRANT TOWNSHIP -- A 72-year-old Wisconsin man has died after a motorcycle crash Friday evening on U.S. 41 in Keweenaw County.
Deputies were called to U.S. 41 one mile south of Washington Mine Road in Grant Township about 7:40 p.m. Friday, according to a news release from the Keweenaw County Sheriff's Office.
A preliminary investigation determined the motorcycle operator, from Cumberland, Wis., lost control of the vehicle, went off the road and was thrown after crashing into a tree.
The man was transported by Mercy EMS to a local medical facility, then transferred to UP Health System-Marquette, where he died from his injuries, according to the news release.
The man's name was not released. Sheriff Curt Pennala said it is unclear what factors were involved in the crash and provided no further information.
"It's something that obviously still remains under investigation," Pennala said. "We're trying to determine the cause of the crash. We have to go through all the evidence that was available to us and hopefully we can come to a conclusion in the near future."
Copper Harbor Fire, Copper Harbor First Responders, Mercy EMS and Michigan State Police assisted at the site Friday.
