Iron River area to feature two autumn-themed events Saturday

IRON RIVER -- The Iron River area will have two events Saturday for the public to enjoy: the Apple Festival & Craft and Flea Market at Beechwood Hall, followed by Harvest & Haunt in downtown Iron River.
The 14th-annual Apple Festival & Craft and Flea Market will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Beechwood Hall, 7 miles north of Iron River off U.S. 2.
Plenty of apple products will be for sale, including jellies, jams and baked goods. A single-serving table will feature an assortment of apple recipes. The Best Apple Pie Contest starts at 9 a.m., with slices available for purchase after the contest.
Activities are planned through the day. Attendees can take a turn at the cider press, with free cider for tasting.
Children can go to the youth archery range, where instructors will show them how to shoot a bow. All equipment is provided.
An activity maze and multiple games will be on site as well.
Brats and hot dog lunches will be for sale starting at 10 a.m.
Baskets will be raffled off and a number of vendors will be on site with their handcrafted items; a list can be viewed on the Facebook page Events and Happenings Iron County.
The Bates Hall Preservation Society also will sell raffle tickets during the event.
The event is a fundraiser for the Beechwood Historical Society, which maintains the Beechwood Hall and the church, plus works to preserve the history of Beechwood. The New Orchard in Phelps, Wis., donated the apples for the event.
Later in the day, the 11th-annual Harvest & Haunt takes place from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Klint Safford Memorial RV Park, 50 E. Genesee St. in Iron River.
The event used to start at 3 p.m. but they moved it back so vendors can take part in both the Apple Festival and the Harvest & Haunt, said Louisa Kniivila, office and RV park manager.
"It's for the community to provide free trick-or-treating for the kids through the campground," she said.
Children will trick or treat from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Haunted Campground, where they can stop at decorated campsites for treats.
The lighting of the bonfire will take place at 7 p.m. There will also be bounce houses and a variety of family-friendly events throughout the evening.
People camping at the park get into the spirit of the event for the children, she said. They work on decorations months before. First and second most-creative awards are given, with the winners earning free camping during the 2027 event.
"We have people who sign up for the next year's spots because they want to be there," she said.
This year they added another bounce house and more music. Iron River band Whispering Donkey will provide a variety of classic rock and country from 4 to 5:30 p.m., followed by Norm Vanaman performing variety music from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. and Dan Pose Band, an alternative country and acoustic-style group based out of Iron Mountain, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
About 30 vendors and food options will be available, along with a beer and wine truck.
The event is a joint effort by the Iron County Economic Chamber Alliance and the Iron River DDA. They also have many local sponsors to help provide financial support.
