KINGSFORD -- Morin Excavating of Niagara, Wis., had the winning bid of $146,190 for work on a Kingsford sewer project on North Cass Avenue.
The project includes 315 linear feet of sanitary sewer main and connecting sanitary laterals, along with road and sidewalk removal and restoration. The city council received two other bids.
In other business, the council Tuesday:
-- Expects a visit Oct. 5 from John Holland of the Michigan Rural Water Association, who will discuss an updated water and sewer rate study. The council had requested the new study in May after rejecting a proposed increase in water and sewer rates. City Manager Mike Stelmaszek had sought the increase after a first study by MRWA showed that both the sewer and water department funds needed a boost to fund projects.
-- Approved a variance request at 305 Grant St. to allow for construction of a covered porch 12 feet closer to the front property line than allowed. It would be 7 feet from the curb. Twenty-six letters were sent to nearby property owners and the city received two letters of response, both in favor.
-- Approved sending Public Works Superintendent Jeff DeMuri to the Michigan Rural Water Association U.P. Water Conference on Oct. 13-15 in Marquette for continuing education credits for his S2 water license.
-- Learned that rehabilitation work on well No. 7 is nearly complete. The existing pump and casing were replaced and a screen and casing pipe were cleaned, according to DeMuri's report. The last time it was rehabbed was more than 30 years ago. Three or four of the water wells have been improved.
-- Learned the existing 1940s retaining wall in the alley between the 200 block of Harrison and Cleveland avenues has been removed and leveled and is ready for new blocks.
-- Learned that assessor Kyle Mulka has approved permits for five fences, three residential garages and three decks/porches. Three more properties were added to the list of dangerous buildings, with a preliminary hearing set for Sept. 22.
-- Noted that hydrant flushing will take place from Sept. 21 through Sept. 24. Residents may see a drop in water pressure and some discoloration.
