Kingsford eases rental fee for soccer field

KINGSFORD -- A change in the user's agreement at Commemorative Field will allow groups that reserve the soccer complex to pay with "sweat equity" instead of a $50 fee.
As approved Monday by the Kingsford City Council, the sweat equity could be applied at Commemorative Field or at a field where the users practice. City Manager Mike Stelmaszek, who proposed the change, indicated that other sports youth organizations such as Little League do some maintenance at the fields they play and practice on.
Commemorative Field can only be used for soccer games and only for a limited number of times per week, due to the unique construction of the field. It was created through the cooperative efforts of the city, Ford Motor Company and Kingsford Products Company, formerly Kingsford Chemical Company. It has a landfill cap that protects people using the field from contamination from chemicals left by Ford and Kingsford Products.
The field is Michigan High School Athletic Association regulation size and is equipped with lights. On site, there are restrooms, locker rooms, a concession area, bleachers, an electronic scoreboard and it is fully fenced in.
Kingsford High School soccer teams formerly used the field, but they now play on the newly resurfaced Flivver Field.
To reserve Commemorative Field, organizations should contact City Hall.
In other business, the council:
-- Agreed to purchase approximately 30 to 35 banners with different holiday designs to be hung on poles in the city. The banners would be the same size as the Hometown Heroes Banners, 30 inches by 60 inches, so they could use the same hardware. The banners are from Holiday Outdoor Décor and will say "Welcome to Kingsford," "Season's Greetings" and "Happy Holidays from Kingsford." The recommendation came from the Citizens Advisory Committee, who selected the three banners.
-- Learned the city's health insurance is set to increase about 16% next year. It also went up about 15% the past two years.
-- Approved a hearing date of Oct. 19 for a variance request to expand a garage and porch at 816 Michael St.
