SAULT STE. MARIE -- A man has been charged after reportedly damaging a Michigan State Police patrol vehicle with a hammer Monday while aboard the Sugar Island ferry in Chippewa County.
According to an MSP news release, at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, a trooper from the MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post was responding to another 911 call on Sugar Island when he received a driving complaint on the same 30-acre island in the St. Mary's River. He was initially unable to investigate the new incident due to his original call.
The trooper then boarded the Sugar Island ferry to travel to the mainland. The vehicle involved in the driving complaint also boarded the ferry behind the trooper. While the ferry was underway to the mainland, an adult male got out and began hitting the trooper's patrol vehicle with a hammer, according to the news release.
The trooper subsequently took the man into custody, during which the man resisted arrest and assaulted the trooper, according to MSP.
The man was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.
Karsten Myerscough, 32, was arraigned Tuesday in the 91st District Court on malicious destruction of property-police property and resisting and obstructing a police officer causing injury. Bond was set at $50,000 cash/surety, according to a MSP news release. His next court date is Sept. 21.
MSP was assisted by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Sault Tribe Police Department, Chippewa County Sheriff's Office and U.S. Border Patrol.
