MARQUETTE -- Jackson Karki, the 19-year-old chairman of the Marquette County Republican Party, has resigned after a series of posts on social media venting frustration about the atmosphere for the GOP going into the midterms.
On his Red Lion Politics page on X, formerly Twitter, Karki posted Sept. 17: "The vibes on the ground are the worst I've seen in my life. No one wants to promote candidates, no one wants to knock doors, no one wants to do s—. Attendance for any right wing event is at all-time lows anywhere I go."
His posts drew national attention and was widely shared on social media, with the Detroit News running an article. It was also cited by the Lincoln Project, a "pro-democracy" organization founded by former Republican strategists.
In his resignation, Karki stated: "There comes a point when the bigger picture in your mind and the warmth in your heart tell you that this is not your path. This is not what you are meant to be doing. It has been my honor to serve as Chair of the Marquette Party Republican Party. During my time here, I have helped many candidates, met countless extraordinary people, and most importantly, helped send Karl Bohnak to the Michigan House of Representatives.
"At heart, I am not a partisan. I have always been open to hearing different points of view and perspectives. I love debate, open dialogue, and honest discussion. However, this position has made that increasingly difficult. The biggest obstacle preventing good ideas from advancing is often the stubbornness and egos of those in positions to create change. This truth hits hard when the ideas and energy of younger generations like mine are pushed aside. A new generation of leaders is needed … bold, ambitious, and creative leaders. Unfortunately for the reasons stated before, I am resigning as Chair, effective immediately."
The statement continued, "Conservatism is supposed to conserve. That does not mean simply protecting wealth or lowering taxes. True conservatism means conserving the rights of Americans, our natural environment, and the power of the people. Growing up in a beautiful place like the Upper Peninsula instills in you a desire to ensure people don't have to leave and that its natural wonders are not destroyed. We can keep the lights on and protect its beauty at the same time. Never let anyone tell you that we can't have both. The American people deserve an effective government, one made by the people, for the people.
"I will remain involved and active to help ensure that candidates running in good faith are successful."
