MARINETTE, Wis. – Two people were killed Thursday evening after being hit by a vehicle fleeing law enforcement in the Town of Peshtigo.

At approximately 6:38 p.m., a deputy with the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office attempted to initiate a traffic stop of a vehicle with two individuals near the intersection of Pine Street and Maple Street.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, the vehicle failed to stop, prompting the deputy to initiate a pursuit.

The pursuit ended three minutes later when the vehicle being pursued crashed into another vehicle with two occupants near the Old Peshtigo Road entrance to a gas station located at Old Peshtigo Road and Country Meadows Road in the Town of Peshtigo.

EMS was contacted, and the occupants of the vehicle struck by the pursued vehicle were declared deceased on the scene.

The two individuals in the pursued vehicle -- whose names have yet to be released -- sustained severe injuries and were transported to medical facilities in the Milwaukee area.

No law enforcement officers were injured. The involved deputy with the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office was placed on administrative duty, per the agency’s policy.

All involved law enforcement are reportedly fully cooperating with DCI during the investigation.

DCI is leading the investigation and is assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Marinette Police Department and a DCI crime response specialist.

According to the department, DCI is continuing to review evidence and determine the facts of this incident and will turn over investigative reports to the Marinette County district attorney when the investigation concludes.
