Protesters

rally in Iran

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Protests have erupted in Iran’s capital following a call by exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi for mass demonstrations.

Witnesses say people shouted from their homes and rallied in the streets on Thursday night. Internet access and telephone lines in Iran cut out immediately after the protests began. The protests, which began over Iran’s struggling economy, have spread nationwide.

So far, at least 41 people have been killed, and over 2,270 detained, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency.

2 killed near

Utah church

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Investigators say a shooting outside a church in Salt Lake City that killed two people and injured six others grew out of a dispute between people who knew each other and were attending a funeral.

The shooting took place Wednesday in the parking lot of a house of worship for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, widely known as the Mormon church. Salt Lake City police do not believe the shooting was random or targeted the faith.

Police Chief Brian Redd says investigators are examining the motive behind the shooting. Authorities say no suspect is in custody.

NASA cuts

mission short

NEW YORK (AP) — In a rare move, NASA is cutting a mission aboard the International Space Station short after an astronaut had a medical issue. The space agency said Thursday the U.S.-Japanese-Russian crew of four will return to Earth earlier than planned.

NASA canceled its first spacewalk of the year because of the health issue. The space agency did not identify the astronaut or the medical issue, citing patient privacy. The crew member is now stable. Seven astronauts are currently living and working aboard the space station. The latest crew arrived in August after launching from Florida.

Dogs learn by

eavesdropping

NEW YORK (AP) — A new study finds that some gifted dogs can learn the names of new toys by eavesdropping. It’s a skill that has only been observed in a few animals, like parrots and apes.

Ten gifted dogs watched their owners hold a new toy and talk to another person about it. Then the pups were told to go to another room and retrieve that specific toy from a pile. Seven out of 10 succeeded.

Only a select group of pooches is capable of this, and scientists aren’t yet sure what’s behind it. The new research was published Thursday in the journal Science.

Starting at $3.50/week.
