Mary Jane “Tootsie” Markham

IRON MOUNTAIN — Mary Jane “Tootsie” Markham, 89, of Howard, Wis., formerly of Iron Mountain, passed away on Friday, Feb. 17, 2017, at the Unity Hospice Ming Residence in DePere, Wis.

Mary Jane was born on Dec. 29, 1927, in Crystal Falls, daughter of the late Edwin and Signe (Anderson) Johnson. She was raised in Crystal Falls and was a graduate of Crystal Falls High School. Mary Jane married Orpheo Battistella and resided in Crystal Falls until 1977.

On Jan. 21, 1980, she married Walter Markham and the couple resided in Iron Mountain until moving to the New Perspective Senior Living Community in Howard in 2016.

Mary Jane and Walter were married for 37 years before his death in 2017.

She cherished all of her grandchildren. Mary Jane also enjoyed gardening and loved going to craft shows and to the casino.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Chad Stroud; three sisters, Joyce Stoychoff, Margie Kuykendall and Belva McCraw; and two brothers, Robert Johnson and Jerry Johnson.

She is survived by two daughters, Jean (Ray) Meyers of Crystal Falls and Beverly (Jack) Olson of Iron Mountain; four grandchildren, Nick (Michelle) Stroud, Scott Stroud, Josh (Danielle) Olson and Tracy (Jason Bischoff) Olson; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Marlene (Lawrence “Red”) Jeffers of Iron River; and a brother, Calvin “Logger” (Betty) Johnson of Crystal Falls.

Mary Jane is further survived by four step daughters, Janet Augustine of West Bend, Wis., Mary (Charles Hagen) Young of Green Bay, Wis., Dorothy (Gary) Temple of DePere, Wis., and Sandra (Toby Vandenack) Markham of Green Bay.; six step-grandchildren, Lynn Woo, Sarah Young, Katie Young, Laurie Young, David Temple and Catherine Smith; six step-great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by a longtime friend, Bill Young; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private family services were held.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
