IRON RIVER — Patrick “Pat” D. Smith, 87, of Iron River, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017, at Wausau Hospital.
He was born March 17, 1930, in Stambaugh, the son of the late Felix and Mary Ann (Rousseau) Smith. He attended Stambaugh High School and graduated with the class of 1948. Pat then served his country in the United States Air Force. While in the military, he participated in the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska and France as a supply sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1954.
Pat earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Michigan University. Pat worked for the state of Michigan in social services for 25 years.
He attended St. Agnes Catholic Church and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Pat was very passionate and dedicated to the American Legion and the VFW. He was the district staff judge advocate for the Upper Peninsula Association of American Legion Posts and the West Side Veterans Honor Guard Commander. Pat was named Legionnaire of the Year in 1981. He held many positions in the American Legion, and was very respected among those whom he mentored throughout the years. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Pat is survived by his sons, Jay Smith (Dena) of Quinnesec, and Mark (Donna) Smith of Bend, Ore.; daughters, Marie (Karl) Romanowicz III of Spread Eagle, Wis., Karen (Guy) Kudick of Dousman, Wis., Lori (Mark) Jensen of Bemidji, Minn., and Gail (Jim) Schouwink of Grandville, Mich.; grandchildren, Wendy Deam, Christopher (Kristin) Romanowicz, Krystle (Ryan) Burnett, Karl (Genevieve) Romanowicz IV, Tanya (Dan Kallio) Nordstrom, Jessica (Paul) Halase, Brandon (Haley) Smith, Derrick Smith, Erik (Kelli) Jensen, Ryan (Whittney) Jenson, Kathryn Jenson, William (Jamie) Rivard, Lindsey (Nick) Prince, Jaimee (Dominick) Sheridan, Kacey Wallace, Dakota Smith and numerous great-grandchildren; and his ex-wife, Elizabeth (Smith) Scalcucci.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to officiate.
Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery. The West Side Veterans will accord military rites at the graveside.
