CRYSTAL FALLS — Jean Boulanger, 95, of Crystal Falls, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2018, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls.

She was born May 11, 1923, in Burlington, Iowa, daughter of the late Robert and Verna (Bloomer) Borske. Jean graduated from Manistee High School in 1941. She toured with the Bohumir Kryls all-girl symphony orchestra in the fall of 1943. Jean graduated from Central State Teachers College in 1945 and majored in music, focusing on the violin. She became Concert Mistress of the college orchestra.

Jean married Donald O. Boulanger on Aug. 23, 1947, in Manistee, and they moved to Crystal Falls in 1949.

She taught in several area schools including Bates, Alpha, Crystal Falls and Florence.

Jean was a charter member in the local Northwoods Symphony Orchestra, and taught Suzuki violin lessons. She was active in the Crystal Falls Musicale, serving as president and secretary over the years.

She served her church in many ways, was a member of the Deborah Circle, and directed the choir for Sunday morning worship services. Jean was also active in the Women’s golf league and was the Women’s League champion in 1970, 1971 and 1972.

In addition to music and golf, Jean enjoyed many other activities, including hunting and fishing with her husband Don. She was an avid reader and enjoyed painting. Her family and close friends will always remember her unique sense of humor and her quiet and kind spirit.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Donald Boulanger; two daughters, Jeanette (David) Furman of Ionia and Elizabeth Holtrop of Naples, Fla., and Lake of the Ozarks, Mo.; four grandchildren, Natalie (Dan) Bennett, Emily Furman, James Holtrop Jr., and Carol (James) Waeckerle; and six great-grandchildren, Marin, Alexander, Isla, Alyson, Owen and Dillon.

She was preceded in death by her son, Robert in 1988; and one sister, Marilyn Todd.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 at the Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls.

Memorial services will follow at 4 p.m. at the church. Pastor Vicky Prewitt will officiate.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church or to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
