Garrit H. “Buck” Hughes

He was born March 13, 1929, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Jacob and Cleopha Hughes.

He attended school in Aurora, Wis., and Kingsford, and married Karen Blazier on Feb. 1, 1958, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain.

Garrit worked 35 years for Frigo Cheese, retiring in 1985. He then worked for Minerick Logging.

Garrit enjoyed reading and going for walks. He had a great sense of humor.

Most of all, Garrit enjoyed his family. He loved going to camp with his grandsons and taking them fishing.

Garrit is survived by six daughters, Carol Hughes, Patricia (Arnold) Abrahamson, Lauri (Scott) Oberlin, Mary (Chester) Stroka, Paula (Larry) Engstrom and Barbara (Jeff) Camp, all of Crystal Falls; six grandsons, Cory (Tara), William (Trisha), Eric (Jenna), Josh, Anthony and Brandon; six granddaughters, Theresa (Doug), Sarah, Emily, Danielle, Katie (Blaise) and Amber; 15 great-grandchildren, Kris, Ethan, Alyssa, Katelyn, Brynn, Devin, Jack, Drew, Brecken, Bodhi, Isziah, Kahlia, Myles, Cooper and Spencer; one sister, Constance Nadiger; and many nieces and nephews.

Garrit was preceded in death by his wife, Karen; three sisters, Jane Neuens, Charlotte Church and Geraldine Pietrantonio; and two brothers, Jerry and Lloyd Hughes

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. at Guardian Angels Church.

Fr. Daniel Malone will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Crystal Falls.

His grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
