Dr. Mary Joan McCabe

Dr. Mary Joan McCabe

CHICAGO — Mary Joan McCabe, 86, of Chicago, passed away peacefully at her home on March 16.

She was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of Stephen and Flora (Barber) McCabe.

Mary graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1951. She attended both undergraduate studies and medical school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She was one of the very few female graduates in medicine of that era and was very proud of this accomplishment.

Dr. McCabe had a private practice in medicine and was board certified in psychiatry in Chicago for over 50 years. She took in patients that most would turn away: the poor, forgotten, infirm and cast away, and treated them with care and concern that was most laudable.

Mary gave generously in life and in legacy to numerous charities and was always ready to lend a helping hand for those in need.

Mary enjoyed travel, haute cuisine, the theater, the arts, Michigan Wolverines sports, and her church, St. Michael Catholic Church in Old Town.

Mary was the last of her nuclear family to pass.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews; two stepchildren; and friends in Iron Mountain, Chicago and throughout the country.

Mary donated her body for research purposes to the University of Michigan School of Medicine.

A memorial Mass will be planned for this summer with details to follow.
