MARINETTE, Wis. — Melissa M. Peterson, 42, of Marinette, passed away Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019, unexpectedly at home. She was born Aug. 16, 1977, in Iron Mountain to Al and Sally (McMahon) Peterson.

She spent her early life in Kingsford before moving to Marinette with her family in 1987. Melissa graduated from Marinette High School with the Class of 1995. She was a standout high school athlete in track and field events, competing in the long jump and 100-meter-dash. Melissa competed at the WIAA State Track Tournament all four years during high school and took home a gold medal in the long jump her senior year. She was also talented on the basketball court.

Melissa was employed by Unlimited Services of Oconto and enjoyed working there. She loved gardening and was especially proud of her sunflowers. She and her fiancé recently took a trip to Mount Rushmore and she was excited to tell everybody about their adventure.

She enjoyed riding her bike and swimming in her sister’s pool. She also had a big heart for animals. She was loved by everyone that truly knew her.

Melissa is survived by her fiancé, Tim Jagielski of Marinette, and their son, Gavin; Tim’s son Brennan; her parents, Al and Sally Peterson of Marinette; a brother, Andy (Stephanie) Peterson; a sister, April (Bryan) Holder; and was especially proud of her new nephew, Lincoln, along with Bryan’s son, Soren; and a special aunt and godmother, Gloria Sjoquist. She is further survived by aunts and uncles and their families; brothers and sisters-in-law in the Jagielski family.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Arlene and George McMahon, Cecelia Jagielski, and Sandy Jagielski.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 at the Hansen-Onion-Martell Funeral Home in Marinette.

A service will follow at 4 p.m., with the Rev. Craig Mansur officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Marinette.
