Harold N. Gill

AMASA — Harold N. Gill, 93, of Amasa, passed away Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019.

Harold was born in Amasa on Aug. 8, 1926, to Harry and Lillian (Pari) Gill. He was a 1944 graduate of Amasa High School.

Harold enlisted in the US Navy on Aug. 24, 1944, and served until June 8, 1946. He was a World War II veteran and served in the European and Pacific Theaters.

On July 7, 1948 he married Catherine Nelson at Emanuel Lutheran Church. Together they made their home in Amasa and raised five children. Harold worked at the Warner Mine in Amasa for many years before moving into law enforcement. After serving as undersheriff, he was elected as Iron County Sheriff in 1974, a position he served in until 1988. Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, working on cars, and was a die hard Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions fan.

Harold is survived by his children, Candy Soderena of Amasa, Jim (Kathleen) Gill of Amasa, Joe Gill of Gaastra, Michael (Lisa Powel) Gill of Iron River and Tammy (Al) Jaeger of Crystal Falls; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine; two sisters; and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 16 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Amasa.

A memorial service will follow at noon at the church, with Pastor Vicky Prewitt officiating.
