Ted Berklund

KINGSFORD — Ted Berklund, 84, of Kingsford, passed away peacefully on Dec. 9, 2019, at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain.

He was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Goodman, Wis., son of the late Theodore (Mike) and Edna (Olsen) Berklund. In 1956 he married Betty Hadden of Ladysmith, Wis.

Ted was a logger in this area until 1967 when he returned to Whitewater, Wis., to complete an MBA.

He served as business administrator for United World Mission in Dakar, Senegal, and then for Mission Aviation Fellowship in Zaire (Now the DRC).

Following this, Ted founded and directed AFREMED (Africa Relief and Medical Service), a non-profit organization that served the logistical needs of 42 mission hospitals and village clinics, and 39 different mission and governmental non-profit organizations in the DRC.

In 1990, Ted returned to the U.S., spending his retirement years gardening and cutting firewood for the pleasure it gave him and everyone who knew him.

Ted was proceeded in death by his wife, Betty.

He is survived by a son, Howard (Lori) Berklund of Oswego, Ill., Kathy (Ron) Page of Montreal, Canada; three grandchildren, Sonia, Caleb, and Jordan, all of Canada; two nieces, Linda (Don) Sternhagen and Greta (Joe) Sato.

He was proceeded in death by one sister, Lorraine (Charles) Sternhagen; and one niece, Kay (Frank) Weaver.

A service will be held Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Fence Bible Church in Fence, Wis.

Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m., with the service to follow at 11:30 a.m.
