LaVerne graduated from Kingsford High School in 1937.

She married William L. Haigh on July 24, 1937, in Kingsford. LaVerne and William lived in Racine, Wis., until 1950 when they bought a farm in “Pine Creek” near Iron Mountain. She worked in physical therapy and retired from Dickinson County Hospital.

LaVerne was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain and a long time member of the quilting group.

“Toots” (as she was known to family) was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family was her first concern and treasure; brothers, sisters, children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved all the times family would gather. Dessert was also a passion, berries, cakes, pies, she was a master of them all. She never wanted to “waste” a day and tried to remain busy and active as she was able until the very end.

She loved traveling and playing cards. After retiring she traveled, covering all fifty states. She traveled from the Arctic Circle in Alaska to Australia and New Zealand and Europe, also spending the winter months in Arizona with her brothers and sisters.

She will be dearly missed by her children, William D. Haigh (Darlene), John R. Haigh, (Jean) and Sally L. Nischke (Keith); eight grandchildren, William J. Haigh, Greggory (Amanda) Haigh, John (Megan) Haigh, Molly (Bryan) Thieme, Kelly (Dan) Sinkey, Elyce (Clint) Wos, Levi (Kerri) Nischke and Caleb Nischke; 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Marcella and brother, David; nieces, nephews, and other dear relatives.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter at birth, three brothers, Kenneth, Melvin and John Heidtke, and one sister, Lorraine Bulgrin.

A visitation will be Saturday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to noon at First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will follow at noon at the church with Paster Brian Laurila.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.
