GWINN — The Rev. David W. Sedlock, 64, of Gwinn, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 23, 2020, at Bishop Noa Home in Escanaba.

Fr. Sedlock was born Nov. 6, 1955, in Marquette, the son of the late Raymond and Carol (Karbum) Sedlock. He attended school in Marquette until the family moved to Gwinn.

Fr. Sedlock was an artist for 10 years. He owned an art store in Gwinn and worked as a freelance artist. He attended Northern Michigan University and received an associate of science degree. Fr. Sedlock attended the St. John Vianney Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

He attended St. Thomas College for two years and earned his bachelor of arts degree. Fr. Sedlock earned a master of divinity degree at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corner, Wis.

Fr. Sedlock was ordained to the diaconate on April 6, 1991, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Gwinn. After his ordination to the diaconate, he served at St. Anne Parish on Mackinac Island. Fr. Sedlock was ordained to the priesthood on Dec. 6, 1991, at St. Peter Cathedral by the Most Reverend Mark F. Schmitt.

After his ordination to the priesthood, he assisted at Holy Rosary Parish in Grand Marais, and St. Therese Mission in Germfask. He was appointed as associate pastor of St. Mary & St. Joseph Parish in Iron Mountain. He also served as associate pastor of St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette. Fr. Sedlock served as administrator of St. John the Baptist Parish in Garden, St. Andrew Parish in Nahma and St. Mary Magdelene Parish in Cooks. In 1994, he was appointed as master of ceremonies for the Diocese of Marquette. In 1995, Fr Sedlock was appointed as pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Garden, St. Andrew Parish in Nahma and St. Mary Magdelene Parish in Cooks, and was also appointed to the Diocese of Marquette Liturgical Commission.

In 1996, he briefly served as associate pastor of St. Mary & St. Joseph Parish in Iron Mountain, and later in the year was appointed as pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Escanaba. He was appointed as pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Rapid River, in 1997, where he continued to serve until 2004. After being granted a leave of absence due to health reasons in early 2004, he was appointed associate pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Bark River, and St. John Neumann Parish in Spalding/Hermansville. He was granted a leave of absence in 2006 due to health reasons but continued to celebrate Mass privately in his home until early 2020.

In addition to his love and dedication to the Catholic faith, he enjoyed hunting, movies, painting, carpentry, riding his tractors, and his pets. He will be deeply missed by so many.

Fr. Sedlock is survived by his mother, Carol (Karbum) Sedlock; brother, Mike Sedlock of Skandia, brothers-in-law, Bernard Stiritz and Matt Wood, both of Gwinn; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; his father, Raymond, and sisters, Anne Wood and Mary Stiritz.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Seminarian Endowment Fund of the Diocese of Marquette.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Gwinn. A Mass of Christian burial will follow with the Most Reverend John Doerfler, as principal celebrant. The Very Reverend Allen Mott and Reverend Gregory Heikkala will concelebrate along with priests of the Diocese of Marquette. Reverend Heikkila will be the homilist.

Fr. Sedlock will be laid to rest in the Forsyth Township Cemetery. The graveside service will be officiated by the Very Reverend Allen Mott and will take place at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time on Nov. 3.
