KINGSFORD — Gerald L. “Jerry” McIntyre, 78, of Kingsford, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021, at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain.

Jerry was born Sept. 7, 1942 in Wayne, Mich., son of the late Roy and Genevieve (Kitchen) McIntyre. He graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1960 and went on to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Eastern Michigan University. He furthered his education over the years and eventually earned his master’s degree in social work from Northern Michigan University.

Jerry married Nancy Halpin on July 19, 1969, in Royal Oak, Mich.

He was employed by the State of Michigan for 27 years, retiring in 1997 as the Director of Social Services at the Iron Mountain office. In retirement, Jerry worked with the Dickinson-Iron District Health Department as an administrator.

Jerry was extremely community minded, sat on many boards over the years, and was a Governor’s Service Award nominee.

His involvement in the Boy Scouts of America was extensive and he was elected by his peers to The Order of the Arrow Honor Society and he also received the Silver Beaver Award, the Order of the Arrow Founder’s Award, Boy Scouts District Award of Merit and the Prophet Elias Emblem from the Orthodox Scouting Commission.

Jerry was an active member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford and Iron Mountain-Kingsford Kiwanis where he had 15-plus years of perfect attendance.

He was also involved in the United Way, the Great Start Collaborative, the Dickinson-Iron Homeless Housing Workgroup, Dickinson Iron Collaborative Board, Dickinson Iron Healthy Youth Coalition, Play in the Pines Playground, Iron-Dickinson Children’s Trust Fund Council, the Caring House and was the director of the Alpha-Omega House.

He was an avid deer hunter and an excellent cook, always wanting to open his own restaurant.

Jerry is lovingly survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Scott (Anne) McIntyre of Madison, Wis.; daughters, Jodi Witter of Waupun, Wis. and Genevieve (Michael) Angeloff of Kingsford; four grandchildren, Desiree, Hunter, Austin and Phoebe; a great-grandson, Wilder; nieces, Sue (Steve) Daley, Diana (Joe) Franchak, and Ruth (Dan) Ferrier; brother-in-law, George Sommerman; and sister-in-law, Carol (Ray) Paver.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Sommerman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 28, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home.

A memorial Mass will follow at American Martyrs Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Family Ties Adult Center, 1238 Carpenter Ave., Iron Mountain, MI.
