RADM Richard A. Martini

Born in Norway, Mich., he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, the former Janet I. Fretwell of Ogden, Utah; parents, Andrew and Anna Martini; and sister, Kathleen.

A member of the Naval ROTC at the University of Utah, he received his commission upon graduation in 1954 and was assigned to flight school. His 30-year Navy career included various duties, but he considered himself first and foremost an aviator.

He served with five squadrons, deploying to bases worldwide. He was the commanding officer of Patrol Squadrons 24 and 30, and Commander Patrol Wing 11. After promotion to Rear Admiral, he served as Commander Iceland Defense Force and Director, ASW Division, Office of the CNO.

After his retirement from the Navy, he continued to serve as a program manager in the applied research and development industry.

He embraced technology and innovation, and contributed greatly to the research, development and advocacy of advanced technologies and naval capabilities. Although he had career success, his family always came first.

He enjoyed amateur radio, all things electronics, RVing, woodworking, reading and listening to Pavarotti.

He is survived by his children, Kenneth (Lauri), Steven, and Catherine; grandchildren, Laura, Julian (Silvana) and Maia; and sister Jean Bradshaw. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Money And King Funeral Home, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. The date and time will be posted on the funeral home’s website.
