CHANNING — Donald F. Weide, 98, of Channing, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Oscar G Johnson Veterans Hospital in Iron Mountain.
Donald was born Oct. 7, 1923, in Alpena, Mich., son of the late William Weide and Martha Weide.
Don attended Alpena High School and graduated with the class of 1942. He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946. Don married Helen Heinz on Aug. 7, 1947, in Ohio. They moved to the Iron Mountain area in 1965 and Silver Lake Channing in 1967.
Don, along with his wife, owned and operated the Silver Lake Resort and Restaurant from 1967 until they retired in 1989. Helen preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 2011.
Over the years, Don enjoyed various woodworking projects in which he excelled. In his younger years, Don loved hunting and fishing. He cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and grandchildren.
Donald is survived by his longtime companion, Ursala Grailer; two sons, Derek (Collette) Weide of Gladstone, Ron Weide of Silver Lake, one daughter, Christine (Duane) Cowling of Foster City; one sister, Betty Huetmen of Detroit; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
In addition to his parents and wife, Helen, Don was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Gail Faher; brother, Kenneth Weide; and daughter-in-law, Sue Weide.
