IRON MOUNTAIN — David H. DeGroot, 72, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Monday, Aug. 22, 2022, at Christian Park Healthcare Center in Escanaba after a courageous battle with cancer.
Dave was born Oct. 3, 1949, in Norway, son of the late Henry and Josephine (Roggeman) DeGroot. He graduated from Norway High School in 1967 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Michigan Tech University.
Dave married Trudy Fornetti on Oct. 2, 1971, in Iron Mountain, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. He was employed with ISP Minerals in Pembine, Wis. as a plant manager for over 30 years, retiring in 2003.
Dave enjoyed golfing and was a member of Oak Crest Golf Club in Norway. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially smear and cribbage, with his friends in card club. Being outdoors was his passion, and he loved hunting, fishing and time spent at camp. Dave truly enjoyed entertaining at his camp, especially his annual October trout feed.
More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Dave’s kindness, sense of humor, and twinkle in his eye will be missed by all.
Dave is survived by his wife, Trudy; daughters, Heather (Eric) Hiatt of Iron Mountain and Tara (Edward) Herr of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; grandchildren, Addison and Logan Herr; sisters, Jane (Daniel) Carlson of Quinnesec and Linda (Gregory) St. Juliana of Hannibal, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Susan Fornetti (Matthew Hecimovich) and Diane DeGroot; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Anthony.
Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Michael March will officiate.
