SAGOLA — Robert “Bob” L. Johnson, 89, of Sagola, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family.
Bob was born on Feb. 27, 1933, to Alfred and Beatrice (Mattchett) Johnson in Sagola Township.
Bob was born to that generation of men who have been called the greatest generation. Instilled with a strong work ethic and devotion to his family which would carry into his adulthood, Bob left school at the tender age of 14 to work with his father in the woods.
Bob met his sweetheart, Margaret (Miller) and they were inseparable. They married in 1951 and had four children together. Bob and Margaret were thrilled to recently celebrate 70 years of marriage together.
Bob worked at the Hanna Mine as a shovel operator. During this time, he earned his GED. He kept very busy after retirement as a security officer for the mine as well as working on various home repair projects for many people. He gave of his time to help build the addition at the Grace Presbyterian Church. Bob was truly a jack of all trades. He handmade many gifts for his grandchildren, did leather work and built anything he could with his hands.
Bob and Margaret enjoyed many wonderful years at their cottage on Deer Lake. They loved to fish, partridge hunt, maintain and tend their garden and go berry picking.
A faithful Christian, Bob was a member of the Grace Presbyterian Church. He attended Cursillo at the Mary Grove Retreat Center in 2014 where he rededicated his heart to Christ.
He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Michael “Red” (Anita) Johnson of Felch; daughter, JeanAnne (Rob) Whitney of Sagola and daughter, Judy (Pat) Steinbrecher of Felch; his brother, Loren (Peggy) Johnson; brothers-in-law Jim (Margaret) Miller and Jim Poquette. He is further survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Johnson in 2019, two sisters, five brothers and a great-grandson, Dennis Brzoznowski.
Pallbearers will be Bob’s grandsons, Jeff, Michael, Jason, Tony, David, and Dan.
The family would like to thank the care and compassion offered by Dr. Donald Jacobs, Derrick Schinderle and the extraordinary care given by Tammy Gustafson of Dickinson Home Health.
Visitation will be held Monday, Oct. 10, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola followed by a service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ryan Flunker officiating. Burial will be at Channing cemetery.
