CRYSTAL FALLS — Sophie Bernadette Brauer, 100, of Crystal Falls, passed away Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, at Iron County Medical Care Facility with her family by her side.
She was born on May 12, 1922, in Chicago, daughter of the late John and Bernice (Wierzba) Supergan. She married Edward Brauer on Sept. 24, 1940. Sophie loved spending time with her family and sharing her Polish holiday traditions with them.
She and her husband Edward built, owned, and operated the Cedar Inn Motel in Crystal Falls for many years. She was a Eucharistic Minister for 25 years at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, and she also worked as a CCD teacher for special ed children.
Sophie enjoyed fishing and bowling and was an avid bird watcher and gardener. She really enjoyed teaching the next generation her favorite dice game.
She is survived by her children, Edward (Shelley) Brauer II, Bernadette Utter, Judith Brauer, Pat (Jim) Butler, Carol (David) Sherby, Rose (Greg) Anderson and Christine Obergfell; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents, Sophie is preceded in death by her siblings, her husband, Edward in 1975; two daughters, Dorothy Brauer and Evelyn Futrell; and three sons-in-law, Donald Utter, Martin Futrell and Steven Obergfell.
Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 18, from 9 until 10:30 a.m. at Nash Funeral Home in Crystal Falls, followed by a funeral Mass at Guardian Angels Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Fr. Dan Malone will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made to St. Vincent de Paul’s in Crystal Falls, the Food Pantry in Crystal Falls, or Guardian Angels Catholic Church.
A special thank you to Dr. Donald Smith and the nursing staff at the Iron County Medical Care Center for the wonderful care given to Mom.
