VULCAN — Richard Emil Miller, 88, of Vulcan, died Friday, Feb. 3, 2023 at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.
He was born on March 31, 1934, in Norway, the son of the late Emil and Margaret (Ahles) Miller.
Richard attended school in Vulcan until he left to help work the family farm where he spent his entire life, caring for the many chickens, pigs, cows and horses and all the other chores while growing up.
Richard also worked off the farm when he was older, not only driving truck for himself, but also driving logging trucks as well. He worked many years for the Inger-Teco Co. of Norway, United Abrasive of Vulcan and Norway Township Cemetery before retiring.
Richard’s lifetime hobby was acquiring a large collection of antique vehicles, including a Sherman Army Tank, a World War II Amphibious Jeep, a 1930 American La France Fire Truck, and several other varieties of vehicles. His prize possession was his 1939 Piper Cub air plane which he flew as a licensed pilot from his own landing strip on the farm.
He loved fixing and repairing all his antique vehicles. He belonged to the UP-Antique Car Club and drove his cars to the shows.
Richard married later in life to Marlene Rochon, whom he knew when he was younger in school. They enjoyed going places together as well as eating out, spending time with relatives and Marlene’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as their fur babies.
Richard is survived by his nephew; nieces; cousins from Illinois; stepchildren; step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene Miller; sister, Eileen Sitowski; and brother in-law, Albin Sitowski; and one nephew, Alan Sitowski.
In accordance with Richard’s wishes there will be no services.
