KINGSFORD — Clyde D. Peterson, 91, of Kingsford passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at his home surrounded by family.

Clyde was born April 19, 1932, in Norway, son of the late Richard and Judith (Wall) Peterson. He graduated from Norway High School, Class of 1950, and earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Northern Michigan University.

On Aug. 21, 1954, he married Sally Anderson at Bethel Baptist Church in Manistique; she preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 2009. Clyde was a United States Army veteran, serving his country from 1955-1957.

He began his teaching career at the Troy School District in Troy, Mich. where he was a math teacher and eventually became principal.

In 1971 he took a position at Kingsford High School as principal. Clyde retained that position for 23 years, retiring in 1994. Throughout his career he furthered his education and received his masters degree in administration from the University of Michigan as well as a specialist in education degree.

He was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) and the Breen Senior Center where he served on the board as treasurer.

Clyde attended the Maranatha Assembly of God in Kingsford and First Baptist in Manistique. He and Sally were active in the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program for many years, traveling throughout the country and helping with missionary work where needed.

They also traveled to several destinations across the country on their motorcycles and had a memorable trip to Sweden to visit relatives.

Clyde enjoyed spending time at his cabin in Manistique, researching genealogy, and watching high school sporting events, especially when his grandchildren were participating.

Clyde is survived by his three daughters, Becky (David) Anderson of Manistique, Susan (Rod) Bjorkman of Kingsford, and Mary (Craig) Kowatch of Wausau, Wis.; eight grandchildren, Jesse (Jamie) Bjorkman and their children, Blake and Brinna Bjorkman, Janna (Tom) Nordeman and their children, Noah, Logan and Tauren Nordeman, Drs. Kurt (Sara) Bjorkman and their children, Cecilia and Bo Bjorkman, Nathaniel Kowatch, Bethany (Brad) Kafer and their children, Andrew, Alistair, Adelaide, Austin and Arianna Kafer; Abigail (Casey) Pempek and their children, Elias, Ezra and Eden Pempek, and Micah and Jonathan Kowatch; and several nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife, Sally, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Daniel and Curtis Peterson; two sisters, Bernice Frans and Darcel Nelson.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 10 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. J Martin, PhD. will officiate. Burial will be in the Norway Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established at The Kingsford High School.
