James Gurchinoff

IRON RIVER — James Gurchinoff, 84, of Iron River, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson in Iron Mountain.

He was born on July 22, 1938, in Stambaugh, the son of the late Stephen and Rose (Kanevcevich) Gurchinoff. James attended Stambaugh Schools, graduating with the class of 1956. He later attended Michigan Technological University and studied forestry.

James was a US Air Force Veteran.

James married Diana Autio on Jan. 15, 1994, in Riverside, Calif. The couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary this year.

He was employed as a forester for the Keweenaw Land Association. James was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing.

James is survived by his wife, Diana; son, Jeffrey (Brenda) Gurchinoff of Kingsford; daughter, Joyce (Michael) Sealander of Sayner, Wis.; stepsons, Tony Brenes of Iron River, and Darryl Brenes of Green Bay, Wis.; stepdaughter, Cheryl Brenes of Los Angeles; brother, Tom (Mary Ann) Gurchinoff of Dollar Bay; sisters, Pauline Jagemann of Manitowoc, Wis., and Louise Williams of Casselberry, Fla.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

James was also preceded in death by his brothers, Stanley, George, Leo, Peter, Steven, and Donald Gurchinoff; and sisters, Leona Benson and Sylvia Esbrook.

A prayer service will be held at noon on Friday June 16, at the Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River, with Fr. Daniel Fosu to officiate.

The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites after the service.
