KINGSFORD — Ruth E. Larson, 89, of Kingsford, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023, at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford.
Ruth was born July 24, 1934, in Merriman, daughter of the late August and Elfie (Isaacson) Peterson. A lifetime resident of the area, she graduated from Kingsford High School in 1952 and married Paul Larson on Aug. 13, 1955, in Iron Mountain; he preceded her in death in 2022.
Ruth worked at the Wisconsin Michigan Power Company, as secretary for the First Covenant Church, as secretary at Wittock Supply and as an administrative assistant for Champion Paper Company. As a child she was very active in 4-H and began singing in the high school choir. Her love of music continued as a member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Music Club and she served many years as the campaign chairman for the community concert. Ruth was an active member of First Covenant Church in Iron Mountain, where she sang in the choir for more than 50 years, served as the organist, pianist, and as the director of music for over 22 years.
She was an active supporter of the Lilja Foundation and volunteered many hours to help with community beautification projects in Iron Mountain. Ruth had an infectious personality and a witty sense of humor. She loved to serve others and had a passion for flowers and growing beautiful gardens.
Ruth is survived by her three children, Susan (Carl) Johnson of Chicago, Diane (Michael) Doster of Chesterfield, Mo., and Tom (Shirl) Larson of Marco Island, Fla., and Spread Eagle, Wis.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Perkins of Kingsford; and several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, Paul, Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Strutz.
A public memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the First Covenant Church, followed by a private graveside service at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ruth’s memory to the First Covenant Church or the Lilja Foundation.
