KINGSFORD — Bernard J. Mainville, 95, of Kingsford, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.
He was born on Jan. 27, 1929, in Kingsford, son of the late Norman and Catherine (Klein) Mainville. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1948 and was a lifelong resident of the area.
On May 6, 1950, he married Dorothy Ann Weinfurter at American Martyrs Church in Kingsford. She preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 2009, after 59 years of marriage.
Bernie was a United States Army veteran and also served in the National Guard for 20 years, retiring with the rank of major. He was employed with the cable company for many years, eventually becoming a district manager, and was an instrumental part of bringing cable TV to the area. Bernie was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club and was a Dickinson County commissioner in the 1970’s. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and was a member of Oak Crest Golf Club & Pine Grove Country Club. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and spending time at camp.
Bernie is survived by five children, Christine (Jack) Schettler of Breitung Township, Michael (Laura) Mainville of Spread Eagle, Wis., Cynthia (Jon) Horenstein of Florida, Cathy (Bill “Cliff”) Pera of Iron Mountain and Mary Kay (Curt) McKenney of Duluth, Ga.; grandchildren, Jeffery (Jen) Schettler, Stacy Schettler, Michael (Teresa) Mainville, Angela (Neal) Jack, Gwenn (Bob) Rice, Nicholas Mainville (Allison), Benjamin (Makhayla) Mainville, Alexandra (Nick Weaver) Horenstein, Jonathan Horenstein, Julia (William) Wareham, Audra (Jesse) Ingram, Emily Pera (Nate), Victoria McKenney and Christopher (Roopal) McKenney; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Howard DeWayne (Pam) Weinfurter and Ronald (Joyce) Weinfurter; sisters-in-law, Donna Weinfurter, Shirley Weinfurter, Elizabeth Weinfurter, Nora Weinfurter and Joyce Quick; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Bernie was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Katherine; three brothers, Grant, Garland and Norman Mainville; four sisters, Carmen Valentine, Earldene Johnson, Lois Rice and Frances Gussert; and brothers-in-law, Edwin, Vernon, John “Ted” and Robert Weinfurter, and Peter Quick.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Msgr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens. The Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50 will conduct military graveside honors.
Bernie’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
