Ernest Povolo

NORWAY — Ernest K. Povolo, 97, of Norway, passed away Friday, Feb. 16, 2024, at Marshfield Medical Center – Dickinson in Iron Mountain.

He was born on April 19, 1926, in Norway, the son of the late Sylvester and Catharine (Storti) Povolo.

Ernest married Nadine Potkonjak on Oct. 15, 1949, in Butler, Wis. She preceded him in death on Nov. 19, 2023.

He served his country in the US Navy at 17 to fight in World War II and was a proud veteran. He was on the ship, The U.S.S. Freestone (APA 167). When discharged after the war ended, he moved to Milwaukee to work at the Milwaukee Journal for more than 40 years.

Ernest and Nadine lived and worked in the Milwaukee/Brookfield area in Wisconsin, where they raised their son, and happily retired in 1985 and moved back to the Iron Mountain/Kingsford area.

Ernest is survived by his son, Ned (Neva) Povolo; grandchildren, Stefani (Chris) Vail, and Katy (Steve) Presser; great-grandchildren, Damien, Penelope, Lydia and Ellie; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Solda, Sylvia Miller, Lena Sanetti, Angeline Fellin, Agnes Thomas and Jeanette Lundin; and brothers, Reno and Louis Povolo.

At this time there will be no services held.

Interment will be at the Norway Township Cemetery.
