IRON MOUNTAIN — Jane Vera Kondro, of White Birch Village in Iron Mountain, passed away at age 76 in Green Bay at St. Vincent Hospital on Feb. 16, 2024, with her daughter by her side.

Jane was born in Iron Mountain on Aug. 5, 1947, and was raised in Niagara, Wis. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eva and George Durston, and her husband, Louis Kondro.

Jane started her career as a nurse in 1975 as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VA) in Iron Mountain. She later graduated from Bay de Noc Community College in Escanaba, receiving her registered nursing (RN) degree.

Jane held several positions while working at the VA in nursing and primary care services, including Staff Nurse, Nurse Manager, Primary Care Manager, and PM Nursing Supervisor. From her time at the VA starting in the 1970s Jane developed awareness, appreciation and empathy for the collateral consequences of the Vietnam War on veterans and their families. Other social movements Jane actively supported in her lifetime include civil rights, women’s health and services for battered women and their families.

After 32 years of federal service, Jane retired from the VA to travel and spend time with family and friends. She also could be described as a “foodie,” having enjoyed cooking, restaurants, watching food TV shows and baking.

Jane is survived by her daughter, Dr. Jennifer Obinna of Minnetonka, Minn., along with many beloved cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home: 901 Carpenter Ave. Rev. David Johnson will officiate the funeral service at 1 p.m.

Burial will be in Quinnesec Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jane Kondro Memorial Fund.
