Magdalene “Maggie” J. Selmo

Magdalene “Maggie” J. Selmo

CASPIAN — Magdalene “Maggie” J. Selmo, 101, of Caspian, passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility.

She was born March 3, 1923, in Iron River, the daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Gendzwill) Kapusta. She attended Iron River schools, graduating with the Class of 1941.

Maggie married Peter Selmo on Sept. 18, 1950, in Albuquerque, N.M. The couple celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in 2003. Peter preceded her in death on June 8, 2004.

She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Caspian and the St. Anne’s Society. Maggie worked at Michigan Bell Telephone Company for 23 years until the office went dial and closed the Iron River Office. She also worked for several years at Dina Mina Kitchens. Maggie was an excellent cook, always preparing meals and was very organized. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Anyone who knew Maggie, knew that she never wanted to be the center of attention, in life or in death. She was an amazing, sweet, humble person who would help anyone. She was meant to be a caregiver, the youngest of 12 children who cared for her siblings, her husband and his siblings, and her children and grandchildren. Dad always said she was the best Italian cook around…and she was Polish!

Maggie is survived by her children, Shelley (Joe Mandelky) Allen of Mt Prospect, Ill., Mark (Cindy) Selmo of Gaastra, and Gina (Jim) Swehla of Springfield, Ill.; grandchildren, Scott (Jen Hockman) Allen, Erin (Mike) Lhotka, Staci (Rebecca Teems) Selmo, Trisha (Brandon) Zodrow, and Nicole Swehla; great-grandchildren, Kade Zodrow, Tyler Allen, Justin Lhotka, Madelyn Allen, Taylor Lhotka and Jack Lhotka; many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph, Edmund, Zigmund, Thomas, Edward, and infant Walter Kapusta; and sisters, Helen Beaber, Minnette Kapusta, Eleanore Konoske, Frances Otto and Cecilia Richer.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 22 at Jacobs Funeral Home of Iron River.

Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, with Rev. Daniel Fosu to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be in Stambaugh Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the entire Medicare staff for their wonderful care and kindness while she was a resident for the past two years.
