Donald ‘Don’ Hawley

GOODMAN, Wis. — April 12, 2024, Donald “Don” Hawley joined hands with his wife in heaven. He passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side.

Don was born in Goodman on Oct. 28, 1932, the eighth of 14 children and son of Raymond E. and Irene C. (Sipple) Hawley.

After Don graduated from Goodman High School as Salutatorian of his class, he held many different vocations, starting with work on the railroad, and as a log buyer for the Goodman Mill.

Don then enrolled and graduated from Michigan Tech University with a surveying certificate and became a surveyor.

On Jan. 1, 1967, Don began his employment with the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department as Deputy Sheriff, and after 27 years, finished his career as Sheriff Lieutenant.

After retirement, Don enrolled in electrician classes and worked in the electrician field as an Electric Journeyman.

Don instilled the importance of education in his children. He served his community as a school board member for the Goodman-Armstrong Creek School District, as Goodman Town Chairman, and was a charter member of the Goodman-Armstrong Creek Rescue Squad. Don coached Little League for 14 years, officiated many basketball games, and thereafter, he could be seen working the scoreboard for the girls and boys basketball games. He thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, reading, and spending time with his family.

Don will be deeply missed by his seven children: Daniel (Rita) Hawley, Peggy Russ, Mark (Laurie) Hawley, Timothy (Peggy) Hawley, Kathleen (Timothy) Nachtwey, Becky (Daryl) Waters and Kristofer (Leesa) Hawley; 18 grandchildren: Stephanie, Jessica (Ryan), Eric (Emily), Danielle (Brandon), April, Sarah, Brian (Ashlee), Bethany (Matthew), Shawn, Mitchell, Thomas (Mallory), Scott (Katie), Alex (Tanner), Analise, Zoe, Roy, Matthew (Kelsey) and Paige (Isaac); 23 great-grandchildren — and another on the way; two brothers: Jim Hawley and Wayne (Alice) Hawley; sisters-in-law: Dixie Hawley and Jean Walker; many nieces and nephews; and special neighbors: Cory, Val and James Carlson.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vonna; and siblings: Marie, Irene, Louise, Barbara, June, Jean, Denise, Janice, Robert, Howard and Russell; and son-in-law, Roger Russ.
