Dr. Robert Koski

IRON RIVER — Dr. Robert “Bob” Gust Koski of Iron River, passed away on April 20, 2024, at the age of 77.

Bob was known to many as “Dr. Koski,” to his family he was simply Dad and to his wife of 55 years, “Koski.” Bob and Carolyn met at Northern Michigan University and married soon after graduation.

Bob wasn’t long into his career in the insurance industry when he decided to pursue a career in medicine. Anesthesiology was Koski’s calling, and he served his community well. Throughout the years, words of appreciation from his many patients made their way back to the family. It was clear he loved caring for patients and did it with a sense of humor and great compassion.

Koski loved the outdoors, “camp,” hunting, lake life and most of all, skiing. He was proud of his Finnish heritage and loved a good sauna followed by a plunge in Chicagon Lake or a roll in the snow. You could find him hitting the slopes at his favorite ski resort, Ski Brule or enjoying the great outdoors at his camp, the Elmwood Hunt Club. Afterall, he was the unofficial Mayor of Elmwood. He was lucky enough to take a bucket list hunting trip to Namibia in 2019 and was proud to bring home an Oryx and a Steenbok.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; and children, Karitsa (Joel) Kassabian, Meri (Keelan) McNulty, and John (LeeAnn Kirkpatrick) Koski, and grandchildren, Mina and Julian Kassabian, Caleb, Brendan and namesake, Robert McNulty. He is further survived by many, many, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to Pine Mountain Ski Team in Bob’s honor. Checks can be mailed to Pine Mountain Ski Team C/O John Bittenger at 1120 Iron Mountain Street, Iron Mountain, Michigan 49801. And, if you find yourself on the slopes of Ski Brule, take a moment to carve a turn for Bob.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.

Condolences may be expressed to the family of Dr. Robert Gust Koski online at www.ernashfuneralhomes.com.
