Lorraine Marlow

IRON MOUNTAIN — Lorraine Marlow, 99, lifelong resident of Iron Mountain, went to meet her husband David on Friday, April 12, 2024.

Daughter of Bert and Mary (Hattam) Carollo, Mom was born June 13, 1924, in the house her father built on the North Side. Grandpa Carollo died right after she and dad got married in August 1946. Mom and Dad took over the house and lived there all their lives, raising us and Grandma until Grandma’s death in 1987.

Mom enjoyed a long, wonderful life. She and Dad were married 52 years before his passing on March 27, 1998.

Mom was involved in more things than can be mentioned here, and a lot we forgot. Suffice it to say she had a very full life.

One of her winter pastimes was her card club. A group of women met once a month for more than 50 years, playing “500.” The group rotated houses each month, and over the many years some of the ladies changed, but Mom and a few others kept it up as long as they could. Dad would step in once and awhile as a sub when one of the women couldn’t make it.

Never one to sit still, she was always visiting someone, taking care of sick friends, or cooking and cleaning somewhere. 10 years volunteering at the hospital was among her achievements. Over the years she also worked at Kresge’s for 6 years (where she met Dad), at General Controls for 10 years; at Ben Franklin for 4 years, at Super Value and at Cini’s Market.

Two things you could set your clock by: Saturday afternoon Mass at Immaculate Conception Church when Mom was serving as an usher, and Wednesday nights when she was working at Knights of Columbus Bingo. The only thing that kept her away was illness and travel, and illness didn’t get in her way too often. She practiced with a walker and cane three days before her knee operations and threw both away about two weeks after the surgery. Mom was a pretty tough individual.

Lorraine is survived by her two boys and their spouses, Michael (Karen) of Howard, Wis., and Paul (Marian) of Chaska, Minn; her grandchildren, John Marlow of Iron Mountain, Sharon Marlow of Seymour, Wis., Jennifer (Roger) Grizzard of Atlanta, and Renee (Jeff) Johnson of St. Mary’s Point, Minn; great-grandchildren, David DeBaere, Lucius and Selene Johnson; step-granddaughter, Tammy (Paul) Timmins of Wrightstown, Wis., and their children Michaela (Elliot Olp with their two children, Oliver and Ellery) and Chrissy Timmins (fiancée Zack Smet); many cousins, nieces and nephews; and great neighbors and friends. She was “Grandma” to many more who knew her.

Mom was preceded in death by her sister, Edith and her husband, Duane of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; her brother, John and his wife, Grace of Chicago; and her brother, William and his wife Caroline of Merriman.

I would thank Julie, Caroline, Kelly and Dan (Santina, Gino and Mariana), Tina, Vinnie, Tammy and to all at Optalis who took such good care of her.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain, followed by a 10:30 a.m. service at the funeral home.

Fr. Michael Chenier will officiate.

Burial will be at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.
