DOROTHY GAMEON

KINGSFORD — Dorothy “D.D.” Gameon, 77, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Optalis Health & Rehabilitation of Kingsford. She was born in Jackson, Mich., on Sept. 5, 1946, daughter of the late Alfred Joseph Sterling and Dorothy Elizabeth (Cox) Sterling.

D.D. grew up in Jackson where she graduated from Parkside High School in 1964. During her attendance she earned the honored position of second chair violinist in the school orchestra (and continued playing at her leisure and for her children and grandchildren throughout her life). D.D. went on to attend college in Flint, Mich. She then moved to Clatskanie, Ore., where she married Charles Marvin Gameon on Dec. 19, 1970.

Two years later, D.D. and her husband returned to Jackson to be closer to her family and have children. In 1980 they moved to the Upper Peninsula and eventually established their family home in Kingsford to raise their two daughters.

In D.D.’s early years, she worked in one or two different business office positions, however after moving to Kingsford she found her passion and spent the next 35 years in the service of others as a self-employed cosmetologist. Additionally, for 19 of those years she also worked as a deli counter associate at Tadych’s grocery store in Iron Mountain.

Throughout the years she would often express how much she enjoyed her work as a beautician, the people she met, and the multiple customers she had, whose relationships frequently blossomed into lasting friendships. In her free time, she enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, traveling to new places and visiting family and friends whenever possible (while collecting clowns, turtles and collectible keepsake spoons along the way), in addition to spending time with her five grandchildren, whom she loved and adored.

D.D. had a laugh and smile that lifted spirits immediately. Her sense of humor, and her caring and thoughtful ways will always be held close to our hearts and remembered forever.

D.D. is survived by her husband, Charles; daughters, Heather (Sean) McLaughlin of Iron Mountain, and Elizabeth Rowell of Farmington, Minn.; grandchildren, Dominic, Sophia, Keira, Ruby and Cameron; and sister, Bonnie (Robert) Maki of Ironwood.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 10, with funeral services to follow at 4 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain.
