Alfred ‘Al’ Swanson
DUNBAR, Wis. — Alfred “Al” Clayton Swanson, 85, of Dunbar, Wis., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his loving family and special friends, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Al was born on May 9, 1939, to Henning and Catherine Swanson of Goodman, Wis. He was one of 10 children. He graduated from Goodman High School in 1957. He then joined the U.S. Army and served three years as a helicopter mechanic. He worked 40 years at the Niagara paper mill, retiring in 2001.
Al was a skilled carpenter and built many things, including two homes for his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing guitar and singing, and was an avid history buff. His greatest joy was time spent with his family. He will be remembered for his quick wit and great sense of humor.
He is survived by Jeanne, his devoted wife of 63 years. He is also survived by his four children: Debbie Ziebert of Dunbar, Michael Swanson of Wasilla, Alaska, Julie (Tom) Lorenz of Beecher, Wis. and Tammy (Jason) Decker of Coleman, Wis. Al has six grandchildren, Tyler (Whitney) Lorenz, Michael Ziebert, Hannah Swanson, Austin Lorenz, Jenna Decker and Daniel Decker; and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Kennedy Lorenz. He is also survived by a brother, Richard (Betty) Swanson of Goodman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and eight of his siblings.
Al was deeply loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no memorial service. A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
