Larry Nylund

CRYSTAL FALLS — Larry Scott Nylund, 72, of Crystal Falls, passed away on Sept. 12, 2024, at Aspirus Iron River Hospital with his sisters by his side.

Larry was born on Christmas Day in 1951 in Crystal Falls, the son of Sally (Nyland) Nylund and Robert Nylund.

He graduated from Forest Park in 1970 and went on to attend Western Michigan University, where he earned a degree in psychology. Often, Larry hitchhiked from Crystal Falls to Kalamazoo, determined to achieve his goal of becoming a college graduate. After working in Detroit for a few years, he returned to school at Ferris State University and earned his degree in pharmacy in 1988.

Larry lived in Grand Rapids and loved entertaining friends in his beautifully renovated Victorian home, along with his partner, Scott. Together, they enjoyed traveling, skiing, cooking, and exploring antiques. Whenever Larry returned home to Crystal Falls, he cherished spending time with his family, especially his beloved nieces and nephews. He was the “cool uncle” who loved spoiling them, and every gift included a book with money in it for their college funds.

In 1994, Larry suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed on his left side. Although doctors told him he would not walk again, he proved them wrong by setting the goal of dancing with his niece, Stephanie, at her wedding in 1996. Through determination, stubbornness, persistence, and a positive attitude, Larry achieved this goal. His faith never wavered.

Those who knew Larry will deeply miss his sharp sense of humor and his remarkable ability to inspire and uplift those around him. He always encouraged others to strive for their best and pursue their dreams. Every conversation with him was enriched with wisdom and thoughtful guidance.

Left to cherish Larry’s memory are his mother, Sally Nylund; sisters, Bobbie Stoor, Debra Kay (Dennis) Williams, and Sally Jo (Bill) Santilli; sister-in-law, Karen Nylund; long-time friend, Nancy Hronkin-Force; and cousin, Michael Ripley. He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, and 21 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Preceding Larry in death are his father, Robert Nylund; brother, Mark Nylund; brother-in-law, Roger Stoor; loving partner, Scott Johnson; and long-time friend, Susan Browman.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 20 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church in Crystal Falls. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Vicky Prewitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Crystal Falls.
