IRON MOUNTAIN — James Alvis “Jim” Williams, 93, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Monday, Sept. 30, 2024, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center.

Jim was born on Aug. 14, 1931, in Brilliant, Ala., son of the late Frances Williams. Jim enlisted with the U.S. Army in September of 1950. He served just over 23 years, including active deployments during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

On Oct. 12, 1954, while stationed in Duino, Italy, Jim was married to Umberta Alma “Berta” Leghissa.

Jim continued to work at the Fort Benjamin Harrison hospital as a cook until his retirement. He earned numerous medals for his service, including a Purple Heart Medal.

He and Berta moved to Michigan after his retirement to be closer to family. Jim was a generous and patriotic family man who loved fishing, cooking and spending time with his family.

Jim was a member of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Freemason 32 degree which is considered an honorary degree bestowed upon those who have demonstrated exceptional service to the Brotherhood. Becoming a 32nd Degree Mason requires years of dedication and commitment to the craft.

Jim is survived by two sisters and a brother in Alabama, and several nieces and nephews in both the U.S. and Europe.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Berta; daughter, Patricia Williams-Milton; and his parents.

A private graveside service will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.
